As part of the FOCUS Lab’s exhibition on Hudson Riverfronts, Jon Bowermaster presents the Capital Region premier of WindShipped, a documentary that follows the Schooner Apollonia. After the screening, the Jon Bowermaster and the crew of the Apollonia will join for a Q&A .
Since Spring 2020, the 65-foot Schooner Apollonia has been sailing the Hudson River delivering goods from Hudson to New York City, with 15 ports-of-call along its route. All sans fossil fuels, it’s a very un-Amazon approach.
Jon Bowermaster writes, “I’ve been following the ship’s progress since Sam Merrett first motored the metal-hulled boat up the Hudson from a Boston suburb, in 2015. There were no masts, no sails. Five years later, in May of 2020, the early days of the pandemic, Sam and crew managed Apollonia’s first round trip deliveries, from Hudson to NYC and back. And we were there, with cameras, and stuck with them through their first two seasons.”
As Captain Sam Merrett says in the film, “this is not a gimmick.” He and his team look forward to a day when they are one of many sail freight boats operating on the Hudson, powered by the wind and sun.
